Social Justice
Working for Social Justice
The Social Justice Committee (SJ) is actively involved in promoting social justice in the community and in the world at large. Through the efforts of our members and friends who volunteer their time, contributions from the committee’s annual budget, and periodic Sunday outreach and special collections, we support numerous social justice causes with our energy, our hearts, and our funds. The charitable groups we support are selected by the committee on an annual basis.
UUCR’s recent social justice projects reflect our commitment to justice, equity, peace, and compassion. We invite you to get involved.
Support for Social Justice Projects
— UUCR is committed to racial justice and has supported local organizations with time, talent, and treasure, including Sumner Hall, Minary’s Dream Alliance, the James Taylor Justice Coalition, and Legacy Day.
— UUCR is committed to LGBTQ justice. A UUA Welcoming Congregation since 2012, The Social Justice Committee supports the local chapter of Delmarva Pride.
— UUCR is committed to environmental justice, and is a UUA certified Green Sanctuary Church. UUCR hosted a public presentation on Eastern Neck Wildlife Refuge after it faced Federal budget and staffing cuts in 2025. The SJ committee regularly hosts a representative of Shore Rivers to update the congregation on the health of our local waterways.
— UUCR is a member of the Chester Valley Ministers Association (CVMA) and contributes to CVMA’s Good Neighbor Fund, raising and distributing emergency funds for our neighbors in need.
— The UUCR Holiday Sharing program, in association with Kent County Department of Social Services, encourages the congregation to share gifts annually with various local families in need. In 2026 we supported Sandy’s Garden, a local organic garden that donates its produce and eggs to Kent County food pantries throughout the year.
Over the years, UUCR has worked with and donated to local groups that prevent gun violence, shelter the homeless, protect voting rights, supply food to those in need, sustain our environment, and support at-risk youth.
