Existentialism, that humans exist first and then define themselves, is a very empowering philosophy that sometimes gets mischaracterized as “anything goes.” Yet, when our choices literally define who we are, we hold both the power and weight of those choices. Essentialism holds that who we are is set before we exist and that our choices or science is how we discover or express this essential self. This is the root of religions that espouse predestination.
